Why does it say I have new messages when I don't?

This issue is caused by messages being automatically deleted after a certain amount of time - if an unread message is auto-deleted, the forums don't always correctly update the new message counter.

Sending yourself a message (or receiving one from someone else) will fix this issue, as the forums recalculate the number of new messages in your inbox.
